About AVI (source)
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a legacy Microsoft container from the 1990s. It appears in old camcorder exports, downloaded videos, and industrial capture systems. AVI often contains DivX, Xvid, or uncompressed video with MP3 or PCM audio.
Where AVI shows up:
- Legacy security DVR and industrial camera exports
- Old downloads and camcorder archives
- Software that never added MP4 support
- Embedded systems with AVI-only playback
About WebM (target)
WebM is a web-focused container designed for HTML5 video. It usually holds VP8 or VP9 video with Opus or Vorbis audio. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge play WebM natively; Safari support improved in recent versions. Screen recorders and web apps often export WebM.
Where WebM is used:
- HTML5
<video>players on websites - Chrome and OBS screen recordings
- Discord and web app exports
- Open, royalty-free web delivery
Converting AVI to WebM
Pros
- Often smaller than AVI at similar quality for web use
- Royalty-free and native in Chrome and Firefox
Cons
- Weaker support on Apple devices and older TVs
- Requires transcoding from most AVI sources
Caveats
- WebM output typically uses VP9 and Opus for efficient web delivery. Safari and older smart TVs may need an MP4 fallback alongside WebM.
- Muxara maps the primary video and audio streams. Extra subtitle or audio tracks may not carry over unless you choose subtitle handling in the converter settings.
- Uploads are processed on dedicated workers and deleted within 24 hours. For offline batch work, use the free Muxara Mac app.
